GNRC Hospitals in association with Karl-Storz Endoscopy organized the first North-East Thoracoscopy Workshop  with Medical Thoracoscopy & Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) hands-on Wet-Lab training for the surgeons of the North-East on March 22nd at GNRC Hospital, Dispur, Guwahati. The organising chairman & renowned Cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr. Bikash Rai Das informed that – Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is a recently developed type of surgery that enables doctors to view and operate the inside of the chest cavity after making only very small holes with the help of special camera and instruments. It allows surgeons to do various tests and operations in the minimal invasive way. It is also useful for diagnosing certain pneumonia infections, diagnosing infections or tumors of the chest wall, and treating repeatedly collapsing lungs. Operations that traditionally were carried out with long incisions now can be performed with VATS with very small holes with less pain & speedy recovery. The workshop was attended by a large number of doctors from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, West-Bengal & Orissa. The resource person and course director was Dr. Ali Zamir Khan, the head of the department of Minimally Invasive & Robotic Thoracic Surgery of Medanta, The Medicity, Delhi. The Medical Director of GNRC, Dr. J.P. Sarmah expressed happiness about the workshop and told that this type of workshop will bring our doctors up to date with the latest technology and various newer treatments of chest diseases. He also said that this type of treatment facility (VATS) is already available in GNRC hospitals and being offered to the patients at minimal cost.
