Osteoporosis: Things You Need to Know

Home > Blogs > Osteoporosis things you need to know

In simple terms, osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. As a result of osteoporosis, the risk of fractures increases in the future. When someone suffers from osteoporosis, the variety and amount of protein in the bones changes and the BMD value (Bone Mineral Density) decreases. Moreover, it affects the bone micro architecture as well.

Osteoporosis

There are small spaces inside healthy bones. But, osteoporosis increases the size of these spaces. As a result, the bones lose their density and strength. In the meantime, the exterior of the bones become thinner and weaker, thereby making it more brittle. Hence, incidents of fractures are quite common amongst osteoporosis patients. Such fractures mainly occur in the spine, hip or wrist.

Some facts about Osteoporosis:

  • Osteoporosis may occur in people of any age. But research has shown that it’s more prevalent among adults.

  • There are no clear symptoms of osteoporosis in the early stages till the first fracture.

  • If you have a family history of osteoporosis, then it’s better to consult an Orthopaedician to assess your risk of suffering from the condition in future.

  • If you don’t seek medical attention at an appropriate time, then osteoporosis can worsen and becomes difficult to manage later on.

  • Menopause can be a major trigger of osteoporosis in women.

  • The risk of osteoporosis is much more prevalent amongst Asians.

  • Smoking, lack of physical activity, poor nutrition and low body weight are other important risk factors of osteoporosis.

There is no permanent cure for osteoporosis. But proper treatment can strengthen and protect your bones and slow down the deterioration. It’s best to consult a qualified Orthopaedician at the earliest if you have a family history of osteoporosis.
