In simple terms, osteoporosis is a disease of the bones. As a result of osteoporosis, the risk of fractures increases in the future. When someone suffers from osteoporosis, the variety and amount of protein in the bones changes and the BMD value (Bone Mineral Density) decreases. Moreover, it affects the bone micro architecture as well.
There are small spaces inside healthy bones. But, osteoporosis increases the size of these spaces. As a result, the bones lose their density and strength. In the meantime, the exterior of the bones become thinner and weaker, thereby making it more brittle. Hence, incidents of fractures are quite common amongst osteoporosis patients. Such fractures mainly occur in the spine, hip or wrist.
