Earbuds and Its Effects on Human Ear

Ear buds, also known as in-ear headphones have become a popular accessory for listening to music on the go or attend calls. These are small, lightweight audio devices that are inserted directly into the ear. The popularity of ear buds over the years is due to their portability and convenience. Unlike traditional over-ear headphones with wires, earbuds are compact and easy to carry around. The snug fit and noise cancellation feature of the earbuds attracts people to use it as it helps précised listening at crowded places and while availing public transport.

The credit for the invention of earbuds goes to Amar Bose, an American engineer of Indian origin and entrepreneur, in the late 1970s. The innovation of ear buds had made hearing with external devices go wire-free, hence users can now work, exercise at the gym, or simply relaxing at home, enjoying seamless audio solution for all occasions.

However, as the saying goes- everything comes with a cost, as also with the seamless utility of ear buds. Using of ear buds continuously can lead to many side effects:

Hearing Loss: Prolonged use of ear buds can be detrimental to human ears as it can lead to hearing loss. According to World Health Organization (WHO) around a billion young people around the world could be at the risk of hearing loss because of the unsafe listening habits, they practice through ear buds/ earphones.

Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL): Using ear buds at high volumes can lead to damage of the structures of the inner ear, that lead to tinnitus or buzzing in the ears. This condition is called Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL).

Dizziness: Loud noise can lead to increase in the pressure in the ear canal resulting in the dizziness.

Ear Infection: Usage of ear buds for a long time can block the air passage of the ear canal which can invite bacterial infections. If a person having ear infection shares his/her ear buds with others, it can infect the person using it.

Ear Pain: Misplacement of ear buds while using it can lead to injury and ear pain.

Hyperacusis: People suffering from tinnitus are vulnerable to develop high sensitivity even to normal environmental sounds. This condition is called hyperacusis.

Ear wax: Prolonged use of ear buds can also develop excessive ear wax which can result in acceleration of tinnitus, hearing difficulty, earache, and frequent ear infections.

Effect on Brain: Ear buds are electronic devices that involve Bluetooth Technology which radiates electromagnetic waves resulting in problems in the brain for the long term. High decibel noise levels bars the insulation from nerve fibres carrying signals from the ear to the brain which is a matter of concern.

As we come across the side effects of using ear buds, it is necessary on our end to take precautionary steps to prevent causing further damage to our ears.

First, it is highly recommended to keep the volume level between low to moderate frequency in order to prevent damage of the ear canal.

Second, limit the time period of using the ear buds as prolonged use cause damages like hearing loss.

Third, use of high quality ear buds having noise-cancellation features can help reduce the need to use high volume, thereby protecting our ears from potential damage.

Fourth, using of over-the-ear model of hearing devices can help avoid direct sound vibrations to the eardrums thus preventing further damage to ear canal.

Fifth, sanitizing the ear buds on a regular basis can stop building up of bacteria, sweat and shed skin.

Sixth, using of ear buds while travelling should be stopped as it is already noisy in public transport which forces the users to increase the volume for hearing better due to the surrounding sound.

Earbuds have become a widely used audio accessory for their portability and convenience. However, it is always recommended to be mindful of the potential side effects of its prolonged usage and to take precautions to protect our hearing and overall health.
