Guwahati | January 5, 2026: GNRC Hospitals, Dispur on Monday celebrated its 40th Foundation Day, marking the completion of 39 years of compassionate service to the people of Assam and the Northeast, with a day-long observance that reflected on the institution’s journey, its people, and its continued responsibility towards quality healthcare and trauma education.

Dr. Siddhartha Singh, Commissioner & Secretary, Medical Education and Research Department, Government of Assam graced the event as the Chief Guest and Dr. Umesh Phangcho, Director of Health Services, Assam; and Mr. Adip Kumar Phukan, Editor-in-Chief, DY365 were present as the Guest of Honour. They addressed the gathering and shared their perspectives on the evolving healthcare landscape and the role of institutions like GNRC in strengthening tertiary care services in the state.

The Foundation Day programme, held at the GNRC Dispur campus, brought together senior government officials, healthcare professionals, media representatives, and employees to commemorate the growth of an institution that began its journey in 1987 and went on to play a defining role in shaping super-specialty healthcare in the region. GNRC Hospitals, Dispur is recognised as the first super-specialty tertiary care hospital in Assam and the Northeast, having introduced several advanced medical services at a time when such facilities were scarce in the region.

A key moment of the morning session was the presentation titled “Journey of GNRC Hospitals, Dispur – 2025”, delivered by Mr. Karthik Periasamy, Chief Executive Officer, GNRC Hospitals, Dispur, in the presence of Dr. Subrata Dev Bhagabati, Chief Operating Officer, GNRC Dispur, and Dr. Ashish Malakar, Group CEO, GNRC Group of Hospitals.

GNRC was started as a neurology clinic in 1984 at Maligaon, Guwahati. Later it was established as the first Neuroscience Centre of Northeast India on 1st January, 1987 with Neurology, Neurosurgery and Radiology along with the first CT Scan machine of the region. GNRC was the only healthcare institution at that time with the facilities for treatment of neurological problems including surgeries of the brain and spine. The first ICU of Northeast India was set up at GNRC in the year 1990 followed by first MRI in the year 1995.

By the year 2000 the humble single specialty neuroscience centre developed into Northeast India’s first Multispecialty hospital equipped with the record of first Cathlab and first open heart surgery of the region.
During the Foundation Day celebration, Dr. Firdaus Ahmed was conferred with the Best Patient Outcome Award in recognition of his contribution to patient care and clinical outcomes. Dr. Saurabh Kumar Das was felicitated and awarded for serving the largest number of patients through his surgical expertise. Winners of various in-house competitions organised as part of the Foundation Day celebrations were also awarded, acknowledging employee participation and teamwork across departments.

Adding academic depth to the day’s observance, GNRC Hospitals organised an evening Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme as part of GNRC Trauma Awareness and Prevention Month, underscoring the institution’s focus on trauma preparedness and emergency care. The trauma-focused CME featured eminent faculty from India and abroad, including Dr. Joyce Koh of Singapore General Hospital, Dr. Sonam Jamtsho, Board Diplomate of the Royal College of Neurosurgical Surgeons of Thailand, and Dr. Rocket Chandra Brahma, Professor of Surgery, among others. The sessions addressed contemporary challenges and advances in trauma management across orthopaedics, neurosurgery, and general surgery.

Senior neurosurgeons Dr. Amrit Kumar Saikia and Dr. Paran Jyoti Barman, Dr. Gautam Rava from the Department of Orthopaedics, senior general surgeon Dr. Nipanka Goswami, along with Dr. Debajanee Gogoi Majumdar, Dr. Gouri Sankar Narah and Dr. Bhaskar Hazarika from the Department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care, also interacted with the media on the occasion. The doctors highlighted GNRC’s initiatives in trauma care, emergency preparedness, and public awareness, and emphasised the importance of early intervention, structured trauma systems, and continuous medical education in reducing trauma-related mortality and long-term disability.

Senior editors and representatives from leading regional media organisations were also present at the programme, adding to the significance of the occasion.
As GNRC Hospitals, Dispur enters its 40th year, the institution reiterated its commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery, medical education, and trauma care initiatives, while continuing to serve the people of Assam and the Northeast with compassion, responsibility, and trust.
