GNRC Centre of Excellence for Cancer Care Establishes New Standard in Accessible Quality Healthcare


GNRC Hospitals hosted a press conference today to showcase the significant accomplishments of its Centre of Excellence for Cancer Care. Since its establishment six months ago, the center has demonstrated noteworthy success over the past 3 months, positioning itself as a premier provider of comprehensive and advanced oncology services in the region.


The conference was addressed by Dr. Ashish Malakar, Group CEO, GNRC Hospitals, and Dr. Jubaraj Kalita, Head of Surgical Oncology at GNRC Hospitals, Guwahati.
The leadership team highlighted the center's swift progress, particularly the successful execution of 25 complex supra-major cancer surgeries—an achievement that underscores its surgical expertise and commitment to excellence. The center’s integrated approach, combining Medical Oncology and Surgical Oncology ensures that patients receive continuous and comprehensive care. GNRC is aiming to create a State of the Art Cancer Care Centre with the addition of Radiation Oncology and Nuclear Medicine as well shortly. 


Setting a New Standard in Surgical Oncology
The center has effectively managed a diverse range of high-complexity oncology cases, including:
- Head & Neck Cancers, Gastrointestinal Cancers, Uro-Oncology, Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Cancers, Gynecological Oncology, Breast Cancer and Sarcoma. 
The surgical team has proficiently performed intricate procedures such as the Whipple’s Procedure, Cytoreductive Surgery, and Partial Scapulectomy, setting a new benchmark for cancer treatment in the region.
Comprehensive Care and Extensive Outpatient Services

In addition to surgical excellence, the center has delivered extensive clinical services, including:
- Approximately 200 Surgical Oncology OPD consultations, approximately 80 Medical Oncology OPD consultations, chemotherapy sessions for 20 patients and approximately 25 biopsy and interventional radiology procedures.


Dr. Jubaraj Kalita, Head of Surgical Oncology, addressed the media and said, “Each of the 25 major surgeries undertaken at the center represents a step forward in our mission to provide hope and healing. Out of 25 major surgeries 5 surgeries were milestone achieving surgery for surgical oncology department namely Whipples, Rad Cholecystectomy with distal gastrectomy, Cytoreduction, Maxillectomy (intraoral) and Scapulectomy. All patients were discharged safely with utmost care and undergoing or will start chemotherapy in our Centre. By offering advanced treatments locally, we are alleviating the burden on patients and their families, ensuring they receive timely and effective care without the need to travel to far off places.”
